Car 548

Ferrari 290 MM Scaglietti

Driver: Eugenio Castellotti

Winner of the 1956 Mille Miglia

The car was red and yellow but Dad only shot black and white that day. In the shot below, you can see Ferrari 505 driven by Olivier Gendebien leading what I think is car 600 a Ferrari 290 driven by Juan Manuel Fangio.

A had a breakthrough on an original mystery with this collection.

After spending hours searching for information on Car 33, I stumbled across a toy car on eBay.

Car 33 was identified as a Renault 4CV. I don’t know anything about Renault, so I tried reviewing 4CV images all of which were coupe / sedans. This took me down many Internet avenues. Was it a Fiat with Abarth, Allemano, Zagato body work, a Sunbeam?, an Alpine? I wasn't finding anything definitive.

Car 424

O.S.C.A MT4

Driver Umberto Maglioli

DNF (Retired)

While I haven’t found much history on the car, the driver was very competitive throughout the 1950’s-1960’s having won the Targa Florio and participated in a number of F1 races.

O.S.C.A was a custom build race car manufacturer of the Maserati brothers.

Car 351

Fiat 8V

Carlo Fabi / Aldo Pagliacci

39th overall

This is a Fiat 8V (Otto Vu). I’m not positive on the coachwork but it is probably Zagato given the double bubble roof. I’m still learning the very complicated ecosystem of coach building, tuning and chassis manufacturing of this time period.

Note the extra windshield wiper over driver position. Wire wheels, small hood scoop.

Finding Dad's Mille Miglia Photographs

For years, I knew that my father had been in Italy during his Army service in the mid 1950’s. While cleaning the family home this past year, I’ve had to sort through boxes and boxes of photographs, slides, family albums and ephemera from the Marstons and McMillans.

Tucked away among old family photographs and negatives, was a small collection of 3x5” black and white pictures of old sports cars in what looked like a race.

The cars in this photo collection.
